 Gender Specialist – CHANGE Project – Ghana

 


Gender Specialist will design and prepare Global Affairs Canada (GAC) funded “Championing Nutrition and Gender Equality (CHANGE)” project detailed plan for gender equality and gender-responsive nutrition approaches with culturally and socially acceptable innovative strategies.   Gender Specialist is responsible for providing technical guidance to the project team and key project stakeholders to enable them implement activities that are effective in terms of breaking deep-rooted systemic barriers, improving women’s leadership, decision-making and control over resources for community and individual gender-equitable nutrition practices at household and community levels. She/he technically leads knowledge/awareness raising activities that enhance gender transformation and the integration and mainstreaming of gender in health and nutrition programs. 

 


This position will also provide guidance to other project staff in the overall management of the project, establish and foster working relationships with the donor, partner NGO and relevant government agencies.

 


 This role includes, but not limited to:

 


 Project Planning and Implementation - 35% of Time



  • Develop a gender strategy for the CHANGE project in Ghana-identify issues, key stakeholders, structures and develop an action plan for implementation of strategies.

  • Ensure gender component of project are prioritized, effectively planned and implemented in a participatory and timely manner involving relevant government offices, communities, and CHANGE project staff.

  • Ensures active engagement and participation of key influential members of the community in promoting gender equality and transformation.

  • Establish or adapt innovative approaches to delivering gender specific CHANGE initiatives in project communities in ensuring gender equality and transformation in rural context during the design and implementation of nutrition interventions

  • Provide technical support and guidance to project team, key project stakeholders and communities to identify root causes of gender inequality, identify solutions to the challenges, develop action plans and implement same.

  • Ensure that project activities take into account equality between men and women, boys and girls and their equal rights are enhanced in all processes of project planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. 

  • Ensure timely implementation of gender equality interventions to the standard with appropriate approaches

  •  Capacity Building - 30% of Time 

  • Develop contextualized Social and Behavioral Change Communication (SBCC) materials and training manuals/ guides on gender and ensure that the SBCC and training materials are properly used.

  • Facilitate and lead trainings and workshops on gender at all levels nutrition program and produce and submit training and workshop reports. 

  • Technically lead knowledge/awareness raising activities geared towards gender transformation-influencing harmful cultural perceptions, norms and practices that are bottlenecks to enhance gender equality.

  • Provides technical support (guidance, training, orientation, and coaching) to project staff and relevant concerned government staff on integrating gender equality into nutrition, SRHR, MNCH, WASH and Agriculture programs/projects.



Monitoring of Monitoring, Learning, Evaluation and Reporting – 25% of Time



  • Identify, document and share best practices and experiences on the project in relation to gender equality transformation.

  • Undertakes supportive supervision and monitor project performance with a gender lens in collaboration with project and partner teams. 

  • Actively participates in relevant platforms. networks and clusters for knowledge, experience and information sharing for effective harmonization and synergic effect of gender interventions.

  • Fosters effective working relationships with project stakeholders at all levels.

  • Develops and submits reports related to gender equality interventions as per agreed reporting format and set reporting timelines.

  • Prepare of monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual reports and submit to Project Manager-CHANGE.

  • Support Project Manager-CHANGE to organize donor visits and accompany donors on field visits where required.



Sustainability of Project Results- 10 % of Time



  • Ensure gender equality and transformation is effectively integrated into project sustainability plan. 

  • Follow up and facilitate the implementation of activities that ensure sustainability of the project results.

  • Support the NBD focal point and Associate Country Director to develop proposals for new projects/programs that helps to sustain the gains of the CHANGE project.



Other:



  • Comply with all CB policies and procedures.

  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.




Required Skills or Experience



The ideal candidate possesses: 



  • Degree in Gender, Development Studies, Sociology or related field from a recognized university. 

  • Minimum of 7 years’ relevant experience, with at least 5 years’ experience in similar role

  • Experiences should be in gender equality or women social and economic empowerment projects, with INGOs.

  • Highly developed skills and demonstrated capacity developing  gender specific and sensitive indicators

  • Experience in preparing quarterly, semi-annual and annual project reports for large projects funded Global Affairs Canada  is an advantage etc

  • Demonstrated sound understanding of project development and management principles 

  • Highly skilled in networking, developing partnerships; building commitment, contributing to team success, innovation with problem solving and analytical ability 

  • Excellent interpersonal, relationship-building, conflict management, and negotiation skills, especially when developing / maintaining contacts and influencing partners

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, including public speaking, networking and presentation skills

  • Fluency and excellent written skills in English. Fluency in one or more local languages of project communities in Ghana is an asset.

  • Experience in practicing Results Based Management (RBM) or Logical Framework Analysis (LFA)

  • Strong computer skills including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and internet and other computer applications

  • Ability to travel locally across project areas and internationally 

  • Effective in written and verbal communication in English
