Research and Policy Lead - Job Brief


We are looking for a Research and Policy Lead (RPL) to provide technical leadership in the implementation of our research interests. The RPL will oversee the development of new research initiatives and contribute to enhancing Aya’s research and policy portfolio. We have over the years conducted compelling research on Gender in Governance/Politics, Media, and Trade and need a subject- matter researcher to join the team.


 


Strategic Leadership



  • Review the Institute’s existing research portfolio and advise the board of directors on continuity

  • A creative mind to identify new areas of research and develop our research and advocacy portfolio

  • Conduct policy-relevant research in line with the organisation’s vision of achieving gender equality

  • Identify, recruit, and supervise new staff in the RPL department

  • Develop workplans for research activities and advise the board of directors

  • Develop partnerships with other reputable research organisations.



Communication and Advocacy



  • Must be able to clearly communicate basic and complex research findings to our diverse constituents at all levels

  • Engage with academia, policymakers, and other relevant stakeholders on all our research projects

  • Identify research-minded local and international organisations on research collaboration

  • Develop innovative communication strategies for all our research to relevant stakeholders.



Financial Management



  • Provide a comprehensive budget for all research activities and present to the board of directors for consideration

  • Oversee financial allocation and expenditure with respect to research activities in accordance with Aya Institute’s financial management policy.



 




Required Skills or Experience



  • A minimum of a post-graduate degree (MPhil or Doctorate) in Gender Studies, Media and Communication Studies, Political Science, International Development, International Relations, or equivalent experience.

  • Must be a researcher/academic (early career Ph.D. acceptable) with research experience in Gender, and any of the intersecting themes of interest.

  • Familiarity with a considerable number of local and international research organisations and their operations

  • Proficiency in data analysis

  • Should be able to manage multiple research projects concurrently

  • Must exhibit a high level of professionalism at all times

  • Capable of working on large-scale research projects and outreach programmes especially translating and communicating research to policymakers/practitioners where research and advocacy are in sync.

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication and presentation skills

  • Capable of working independently and in a team environment

  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and dedication to the mission of gender equality..
