Introduction

Mentoring is a proven approach to drive rich learning and development for both mentees and mentors.  Mentorship Programs are built through thoughtful planning and sustained commitment to guiding mentees through the mentoring relationship while continually improving the program.  To ensure mentors are equipped with relevant skill and knowledge to support young women pursuing male-dominated trades, the WUSC INVEST project is leveraging mentorship to support young women to thrive in sectors that are traditionally male-dominated.

2.0 Project Background

The Innovation in Non-Traditional Vocational Education and Skills Training (INVEST) is a 5 year initiative being implemented by WUSC which is aimed at building sustainable pathways to enhanced economic empowerment, well-being and inclusive growth for 5,000 urban marginalized young women in Accra, Kumasi, and Sekondi-Takoradi, Ghana. Working in high growth sectors, the initiative will test and scale innovative, sustainable models to improve the enabling environment, reduce gender-specific barriers to women’s economic participation, and enhance access to decent work for marginalized in non-traditional sectors.

3.0 Rationale and Approach

Young women and girls are vastly underrepresented in male-dominated careers in TVET despite their talent and potential to be successful in these areas. While women make up more than half the population of Ghana, they account for a minor percentage of the non-traditional career workforce.

Several researches had emphasized the importance of developing interest in girls early in TVET, to get them thinking about whether a career in these fields is right for them. Mentorship is definitely a great opportunity to guide these young women to be motivated and encouraged to continue excelling in their sectors which are sometimes unconducive and unwelcoming due to some public perception and deep-rooted social norms that frown on women doing works that are tagged as men’s work.

The INVEST project in its quest to see a more impactful and quality mentorship delivered to young women interested in male-dominated sectors, launched its “so me mu'' mentorship program, the local phrase which means hold me up or support me in Ghanaian Akan language is aimed at drawing attention to the fact that everyone needs somebody to achieve set goals.  The campaign is targeting professionals (men and women) working in male-dominated sectors to provide mentorship support to young women with the intention of helping them to be resilient and confident to excel in the sector.

4.0 About the So Me Mu Mentorship Program

The “so me mu'' mentorship campaign is a component of the INVEST in her campaign.  This sub-campaign is aimed at creating a platform that promotes growth and development for both mentors and mentees to thrive in high growth sectors which are mainly male-dominated.  It will provide both parties the opportunity to appreciate and explore the many opportunities in male-dominated spaces.

Applications are open for a qualified facilitator to submit their capabilities statement demonstrating your expertise to train mentors of the So Me Mu mentorship program. The mentorship program seeks to match young women participating in male-dominated TVET sectors with technical professionals in sectors such as energy, extractives and construction, those typically male-dominated, for mentorship, guidance and support.

5.0 Objectives of the So Me Mu Mentorship Capacity Strengthening:

Strengthen the capacity of mentors to deliver a 3-month mentorship program to young women in male-dominated fields

To provide mentors with an in depth understanding of the relevance of mentorship to both mentees and mentors

5.1 Outcomes of Training
