Job Description


As the leading global partner for the Momentum Country and Global Leadership program, (MCGL) is a five-year USAID funded global award that works with country governments and local non-governmental organizations to provide targeted technical and capacity development assistance. MCGL builds upon existing evidence and best practices and catalyzes innovations that enable government-led partnerships to deliver high-quality, evidence-based interventions that accelerate reductions in maternal, newborn, and child mortality and morbidity at scale. The project also contributes to global technical leadership, learning, and USAID’s policy dialogue to achieve global maternal, newborn, and child health, voluntary family planning, and reproductive health (MNCH/FP/RH) goals by supporting globally endorsed initiatives, strategies, frameworks, guidelines, and action plans. 



SCOPE OF WORK



Post-partum hemorrhage (PPH) is the major cause of maternal mortality in Ghana and worldwide. Even though Active Management of the Third Stage of Labor (AMTSL) is a globally recommended three-step method that has been proven effective in prevention of PPH. Ghana has recently developed PPH protocols but there are no official guidelines to support the management of PPH in Ghana. As part of MCGL’s approach to prevent PPH and Hypertensive Disease in Pregnancy (HPD) related mortalities, there is the need to support the country develop guidelines that will regularize the management of PPH at the various levels of health service delivery.



The consultant will be responsible for working closely with both Ghana-based as well as US-based MCGL Staff and the Ghana Health Service, to develop Post-Partum Hemorrhage guidelines for use by Ghana Health Service.



Specific Duties will include the following:



Logistics and Organization



The Consultant will




  1. work closely with MCGL, PPH Technical Working Group (TWG) and the Ghana Health Service to (considering the various levels of care) develop PPH guidelines that take into consideration but not limited to:




  • Bimanual uterine massage

  • Use of various uterotonic algorithms

  • Management of tears

  • Fluid management

  • Monitoring

  • Anaesthetic management

  • Surgical management

  • Use of blood and blood products



Stakeholder Engagement and Dissemination




  1. Collaborate with the MCGL and GHS to develop the PPH guidelines.

  2. Support the GHS/TWG where necessary, to ensure hard or soft copy of the guidelines are shared with MCGL

Required Skills or Experience



  • S/he must be an Obstetrician-Gynaecologist with an advanced degree in Public Health

  • S/he should have over 10 years’ experience managing and or providing guidance to the management of Post-partum Haemorrhage. 

  • S/He should be familiar with the Ghana Health Service structure

  • Pro-active, highly organized individual with excellent verbal, written, interpersonal and presentation skills in English
