Asanko Gold Ghana Ltd. (“AGGL”) is a joint venture between Galiano Gold Inc. and Gold Fields. The primary asset is the Multi-Pit Asanko Gold Mine complex, located in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Galiano Gold Inc. are the managers and operators of the Asanko Gold Mine.




Job Description


We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and committed professional to head our Environment and Sustainability team as:ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY MANAGER


 


JOB PURPOSE


To manage the mining activities to prevent negative impact on the environment and to sustain Asanko's good environmental footprints, ensuring compliance with all environmental laws and regulations, developing and implementing sustainability initiatives, and identifying areas for improvement. The role is also responsible for the frontline management of community issues and support day-to-day proactive engagements to promote good community relationship and social acceptance in accordance with Asanko Stakeholder Management Standard.


 


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Manage compliance with Asanko Environmental standards, regulatory requirements and international best practice.

  • Manage audits and corrective actions of the Environmental Management System.

  • Manage the implementation of Water, Air, Waste and Closure Management plans.

  • Manage the concurrent reclamation program.

  • Develop, plan, and implement company rehabilitation programs and activities to ensure disturbed lands are rehabilitated to meet corporate and regulatory standards.

  • Develop and coordinate strategies to ensure compliance with all national regulations and international standards in the Mining industry required in land acquisition, compensation and resettlement.

  • Assemble, familiarize and implement Asanko Policies, programs and management systems related to Stakeholder Engagement.

  • Support the development and implementation of engagement strategies to enhance and maintain good relationships with Communities, local government, and local Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to ensure maximum participation and cooperation in Asanko SRF programs.

  • Assist in the implementation of Asanko’s commitments in the Local Employment, Relationship and SRF Agreements.

  • Lead the Environment team to optimize its performance, improve efficiencies, and maintain cost discipline.

  • Prepare and justify the environment and sustainability annual budget.



The list of responsibilities is not exhaustive. The supervisor may assign other duties from time to time within the scope of the role.



Required Skills or Experience


Knowledge



  • Bachelor’s degree in Environment Sciences, Social Science or related field from a recognized institution.

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in environmental and sustainability management working in mining or related industry.

  • Experience working with ISO14001 or similar Environmental Management System.

  • Strong Knowledge of Ghanaian Environmental laws and regulations. 

  • Good understanding of local culture and practices.

  • Good external and community engagement skills.

  • Strong knowledge in social investment principles and practices.

  • Strong Land acquisition and resettlement principles and practices.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.  



Skills



  • Excellent people management skills and ability to lead and motivate teams; 

  • Proven communication, organizational and interpersonal skills 

  • Good analytical skills to evaluate information and solve problems;

  • Ability to manage project from start through its cycle;

  • Ability to work with people with diverse socio-cultural backgrounds; 

  • Must demonstrate high level assertiveness and emotional maturity;



WORKING CONDITIONS


The Environment & Sustainability Manager typically works in an office environment but may also spend time interacting with staff in various parts of the organization and engaging the communities and other stakeholders. The role may require some travel to attend meetings, site visits or conferences.
