Job Description

Background for the consultancy

Sustainability remains a challenge for sanitation service delivery in small towns in Ghana, resulting in non-functionality and poor service delivery of many of the public toilet blocks as a result of poor operation and management practices and facility design challenges.

A feasibility study which was undertaken for a project to catalyse systemic change through the provision of sustainable water services in small towns of Ashanti region-Ghana revealed that the target beneficiary community for the project are in dire need of improvements to sanitation.

The communities have inadequate public and household toilet facilities; a situation which leads to the practice of open defecation in the communities. The few existing community toilets are in a poor state exposing users to faecal matter and emitting foul odours and are insecure, especially for women and girls as the available toilets lack privacy.

The target areas for the proposed intervention are the cocoa-growing communities of Adumasa, Krofa and Akutuase with an estimated total population of 11,910.

WSUP, with funding from One Foundation, and in collaboration with respective Metropolitan Municipal District Assemblies (MMDAs) is implementing a project, titled “Safe sanitation in Small Towns of Ashanti Region, Ghana”.

The project’s objective is to promote sustainable access to safe and improved sanitation in 3 small towns of Ashanti region. This will be done through the construction of 3 no. WC public toilet blocks with mechanized water supply system run under financially sustainable management models in the three (3) beneficiary communities.

We intend to systemically evolve the effectiveness of the management models used to deliver hygiene and sanitation services under the project, and to disseminate the learning gained. There are designs and reports available from a previous work to improve sanitation in some selected communities.

There is therefore the need for review of the engineering designs, support tender process for selection of contractor(s) and supervision of works to ensure the construction and operations of the WC public toilet blocks in the communities.

The services of a consultant are required to deliver the project objectives.
